DIY: Make your own lettering for cakes

I love a pretty cake. Don't you?  Especially the homemade kind.  And what better way to spruce up a lovely cake, then with personalized lettering.  This is so easy, you'll start making chocolate letters for everything.

How to make your own lettering for cakes:

Materials Needed:
Printout of letters from the computer
Waxed Paper
Chocolate Candy Melts in any color (found mine at Joann's)
Sandwich Bag
Baking Sheet
Sprinkles (optional)

1.  Type your message, using a font of your choice in an appropriate size, then print it.  I chose a script font, but if your letters aren't connected, I suggest adding extra space between each letter before you print.  This will make tracing a little easier.

2.  Place the printout on a baking sheet and cover it with waxed paper.  Use tape to hold both the printout and the waxed paper in place.  You don't want them moving around while you're making your letters.

3.  Put chocolate melting discs into a resealable plastic bag.  Just a regular old sandwich bag will do.  Place in the microwave for 1 min and 15 sec.  Press the chocolate and make sure it's melted.  Put it back in if it hasn't melted completely.  This is a little tricky, because if the chocolate is too melted, it will just drip out of the bag and you'll have a hard time controlling it (believe me, i know from experience).  If you think you may have melted it too much, just let it sit and cool for a few minutes.

4.  Push all the melted chocolate to one corner of the bag.  Snip off the corner to create a narrow opening.  The amount you clip off the corner depends on how thick you want your letters to be.  I had a pretty thin font, so I didn't clip much off the corner, just enough for the chocolate to come out.  Note: The bag should not be sealed.

5.  Squeezing from the bag's wide end, trace the letters. (If you mess up, just shift the waxed paper and retrace the letter.)  This takes a steady hand and concentration, so you don't want any distractions.  I gave my daughter a popsicle and turned on Elmo. :)

6.  (Optional)  Add sprinkles, lots of sprinkles. :)

7.  Place the waxed-paper sheet in the freezer until chocolate is firm, about 10-15 minutes.  Use a knife or small spatula to remove the chocolate letters from the waxed paper very carefully.  Arrange them on your cake, and voila, you're done!

Now wasn't that fun?  Are you thinking of all the things you can now draw with chocolate?  The possibilities are endless!
